Martin O'Neill has admitted he has not been able to implement the changes he wanted with Sunderland's season starting at Arsenal today, but he has urged fans to trust him.
Sunderland have still to reach agreement with Wolves over the transfer of Steven Fletcher, with the Championship club holding firm on their £15m valuation. O'Neill has so far only signed Louis Saha, and he said: "We need to be competitive and our squad is definitely not strong enough.
"We're exploring everything and anything you're thinking, trust me we're trying it as well. We'll get the players in. It's going to be a tough old season, but that's my job."
