Kenny Miller, Derby County's Scotland striker who was signed from Celtic for around £3m in August, may make his debut tonight against Newcastle, after a hamstring injury.

"With his energy, his attitude and his goal-scoring record he's a huge signing," said County's manager, Billy Davies.

Davies said signings like Miller, who scored winners against Liverpool and Manchester United for Wolves, were essential. "That's the Premier League for you," he said. "You have to spend money to compete.

"The next transfer window will also be very important. We have to add to the squad. The first transfer window was always going to be difficult for us as a new side in the division, but I won't be panicking."
