Tottenham's Nabil Bentaleb has been ruled out for at least six weeks after undergoing surgery on his left knee.

The midfielder suffered the injury while playing for the Under-21s in Friday's 3-0 defeat of Leicester but is expected to return to training before the end of the season.

"The expected recovery and rehabilitation is likely to see him return to training in approximately six weeks," tweeted Spurs, who remain hopeful Bentaleb could be available in time to face either Southampton or Newcastle, their last two opponents of the season.

The 21-year-old Algeria international has only made two starts in the Premier League this season, both of which came in August, after an ankle injury which ruled him out for three months in the autumn.
