Newcastle vs West Ham result: Player ratings as hosts come from behind twice to draw at St James’ Park

Competitive clash saw the points shared up north

West Ham twice looked to be in line for their second win of the week as they faced Newcastle on Sunday, but twice the hosts hit back to secure a 2-2 draw at St James’ Park.

Although they were unable to gain all three points in their battle to avoid relegation from the Premier League, David Moyes’ visitors will have been pleased to leave with something to show for another spirited performance.

While the Hammers remained 16th in the table – four points from the drop zone on 31 points – Newcastle stayed 12th on 43 points with five games remaining this season.

Here’s how every player got on:

Newcastle

Martin Dubravka – 6: Goalkeeper was helpless to prevent Antonio’s powerful early strike after being let down massively by Lascelles. Later denied Bowen from close range with a solid reaction stop.

Emil Krafth – 7: Sharp, low cross for Almiron’s equaliser was perfectly delivered. Was a threat going forward on the right at various points in the game.

Jamaal Lascelles – 4: Gifted the visitors their early lead by inexplicably missing a clearance just yards away from his team’s goal.

Federico Fernandez – 6: Was a solid presence in the Newcastle box when defending set-pieces.

Javi Manquillo – 5: Not the most convincing performance from the left-back, who was kept busy by Bowen throughout.

Jonjo Shelvey – 7: Midfielder looked driven and set the tone for his team. Set-piece deliveries were fairly strong throughout the game, and he finished well for his team’s second equaliser of the afternoon.

Isaac Hayden – 5: Seemed more of a bystander than a participant over 42 minutes before leaving the field with an injury.

Allan Saint-Maximin – 7: Looked as motivated and sharp as he has in recent games. Was at the heart of most of Newcastle’s promising forays forward.

Miguel Almiron – 7: Took his finish well to level for his side and net for the second time this week, and generally performed well for the hosts.

Joelinton – 6: Buzzed about from start to finish, but was not as impactful in Newcastle’s offensive efforts as he would have hoped.

Dwight Gayle – 7: Smart first-half free-kick under the West Ham wall forced Fabianski into a decent save. Deft pass set up Shelvey for Newcastle’s second goal.

West Ham

Lukasz Fabianski – 7: Got down well to deny Gayle after the Newcastle striker slid a free-kick under the wall, and what seemed to be a flap at a corner later in the first half was actually an important reaction save.

Ryan Fredericks – 6: Competent performance at right-back – little to criticise in the 27-year-old’s case.

Issa Diop – 6: Was a prominent figure in both boxes for set-pieces – couldn’t quite make the difference he wanted during his team’s, though.

Angelo Ogbonna – 6: Little to note in the Italian’s first-half performance, but he made some strong tackles in the second period.

Aaron Cresswell – 6: Drilled in a cross that so nearly led to Bowen scoring a second for West Ham on the half-hour mark. Provided plenty of width on the left for the visitors.

Tomas Soucek – 7: Mobility was tested in the first half as he was often forced to chase Newcastle’s attacking players. Settled as the game went on and reacted well to score his side’s second – his second this week.

Declan Rice – 7: Was handed the captain’s armband for the second game in a row in Mark Noble’s absence from the starting line-up; justified the decision with a responsible, vocal outing. Headed against the bar in the second half.

Pablo Fornals – 6: Threaded a perfectly weighted pass through to Bowen in the lead-up to West Ham’s opener – exactly what he was brought to east London to do. Should have done better for Newcastle’s second goal, however.

Manuel Lanzini – 5: Was in Fornals’ shadow as far as his contributions to the Hammers’ forward moves went. Was replaced around the hour mark.

Jarrod Bowen – 7: Notched his third assist in two games when he set up Antonio early in the first half, although Lascelles should have stopped the cross with ease. Offered plenty of energy throughout.

Michail Antonio – 7: Was clearly buoyed by his midweek performance at Chelsea. Chance for his goal seemed straightforward, but he buried it nonetheless for his second of the week.
