Peter Schmeichel: Former Manchester United goalkeeper becomes latest critic of Louis van Gaal's style

The former Denmark international claims that the team's brand of football has 'bored him to death' this season

Peter Schmeichel has become the latest ex-player to criticise Louis van Gaal’s style of play at Manchester United, claiming it has ‘bored him to death’.

The former goalkeeper bemoaned the brand of football that has produced just 46 league goals in 37 games this season, as many as 17^th-placed Sunderland managed over the same number of fixtures.

“Manchester United - a club that love and have followed since I was a kid - have bored me to death this season,” he told Sky Sports News.

"We are one of those clubs that has been dragged in completely the wrong direction. We never used to play football the way we play now.

“We never played for 1-0 and then defend. We always went for the second goal and the third.”

Schmeichel, who saw his son Kasper play in goal for Leicester City during their remarkable title-winning campaign, also claimed that Sir Alex Ferguson’s years of work was being unravelled.

"All the hard work that Sir Alex put in to recover what was there from Sir Matt Busby has been undone in a very short period of time. I, as a fan, want to be winning but to entertain equally as much too. I want exciting players.”

Van Gaal, the under-pressure United manager, recently claimed that his side may have enjoyed more success this season if ex-players in the media had offered more support.

“Of course all this speculation about my future for six months makes me angry. I have shown that many, many times," he said on Friday.

“I have said that, but in spite of the attacks of the media - and not only the media, the legends and other kinds of people - I am here and I am fighting.

“And I believe in myself. I believe in Manchester United. I believe in the players. I hope that everybody is believing like me, then it is much more easier.”

Schmeichel previously told the club's supporters that they should 'demand entertaining football' while analysing a 1-1 draw against Leicester in November. Paul Scholes, Schmeichel's team-mate for seven years at Old Trafford between 1992 and 1999, has been the most vocal critic of Van Gaal’s style this season.

United’s league season will conclude on Tuesday night when they fulfil the rescheduled home fixture against Bournemouth, which was abandoned on Sunday due to a bomb scare.
