Sheringham set to show age is no barrier in Premiership

Teddy Sheringham, the Tottenham Hotspur striker, is set to become the oldest outfield player in the Premiership next season, after reports suggest he has agreed a new one-year extension to his contract at White Hart Lane.

Tottenham will not confirm that the England international, who turns 37 on 2 April, is about to sign a new deal to replace the one that runs out in June, as the Spurs manager, Glenn Hoddle, insists that contract negotiations are strictly private, but it is understood that terms have been agreed for Sheringham to stay for one more season.

Hoddle suggested at the start of the season that Sheringham was looking sharp enough to earn a new deal. The veteran has justified that faith with 26 appearances and eight goals so far this term.

Hoddle, who has sold Les Ferdinand to West Ham and off-loaded Sergei Rebrov to the Turkish club, Fenerbahce, thinks there will still be room for Sheringham even if Spurs' long-term target, Fernando Morientes, the Real Madrid and Spain striker, is signed this summer.

Hoddle is having to move quickly to secure Sheringham for another season, as the player will be entitled to a free transfer immediately unless offered a new deal by the end of this month.

Spurs' ambitions to recruit additional firepower has already been confirmed by their bid to sign another veteran striker, Middlesbrough's Alen Boksic, although it is highly unlikely they would agree to match the £62,000 a week he is reported to earn at the Riverside.

Arsenal are the latest Premiership club to be linked with a move for the Brazilian World Cup player, Ronaldinho. The 22-year-old has consistently been linked with a summer move to Manchester United. However, the Gunners hope to thwart Sir Alex Ferguson's interest with an £11m bid for the Paris St-Germain striker who cost £4m in 2001.

Internazionale have also been strongly linked with a move for Ronaldinho, who removed England from the World Cup in the quarter-finals with a spectacular goal direct from a free-kick. He was later sent off after a late tackle on the full-back Danny Mills.

Leeds are hoping to sign Mills on a new three-and-a-half-year contract this week. The player has been in talks with the club's chairman, Peter Ridsdale, through his adviser, Mark Curtis, for the past two months, but an agreement is expected to be reached within 48 hours. Leeds have come up with a contract worth almost twice Mills' previous terms, taking him to about £30,000-per-week at Elland Road.
