Wayne Rooney has returned to the Manchester United starting XI for their Premier League match against Southampton at St Mary's today.
The club captain has not played since featuring for England in their 2-0 win over Switzerland on 8 September because of a leg injury.
There is set to be a minute's applause in the 23rd minute for Luke Shaw, the United defender who looks set to miss the rest of this season after his horrific leg break playing against PSV last Tuesday. Shaw started his career at Southampton.
United manager Louis van Gaal said this week that he is building a United team for his successor, with the likes of Adnan Januzaj, Memphis Depay and Anthony Martial all featuring in his team, as well as Luke Shaw, although he is unlikely to play again this season after his horrific leg break last week.
"I believe I have a very good eye for young talent. I am a trainer-coach who believes in youth," said the Dutchman.
"When you see my career, you can see a lot of youngsters come through and when I’m not there, you have the guards of the club culture."
