Middlesbrough chairman, Steve Gibson, last night defended Gareth Southgate and his decision to appoint and stick with him despite relegation.

"We will not have Gareth being a scapegoat," Gibson said on Teesside radio. "I am convinced Gareth is the right man. We have not been good enough. That is not down to Gareth, it is down to me, the club and the players. Not only will he get us back to the Premiership, when we get there we will be a force."
