Chelsea look set for a torrid time over Torres

Younger hearts than mine were broken when Fernando Torres jumped ship this week, mostly belonging to those who saw him as a fabulous goalscorer with a sensibility for Liverpool's status within the game. But with the club seemingly at a point of renewal it seemed baffling for him to quit.

Last season Manchester City arrived at Stamford Bridge shortly after allegations concerning John Terry and the girlfriend of his former team-mate Wayne Bridge – Bridge turned out for City and City turned up for Bridge, thumping Chelsea 4-2. Torres' apparently joyful recruitment to a billionaire's Fantasy XI is a lesser offence – though it created misery on Tyneside too as Andy Carroll was snatched away. But we can guess that Liverpool will be in a cold fury at the professional slights Torres has since delivered. Punters may profit from this – £10 Liverpool win at 5-1, William Hill; £10 at 5-2 with Stan James for Luis Suarez to score at any time; £5 Liverpool to win 1-0, at 14-1 with 32RED.

Tomorrow's Super Bowl should generate less angst, as we hold winning positions on both teams, though a Pittsburgh win would bring a bigger reward emotionally and financially. The game may hinge on two elements – Green Bay's highly talented receivers and Pittsburgh's powerful running game. Try a couple of outsiders as first touchdown scorers – £10 Hines Ward (Steelers) at 12-1 with Coral; £10 Jordy Nelson (Packers) at 18-1, with Bet 365.
