Liverpool have signed Steven Caulker on loan until the end of the season to ease their defensive crisis, but it's unlikely they signed him based on his most recent performance.

The once-capped England international was a part of the Southampton side walloped 6-1 in the Capital One Cup at the start of December - with his new team Liverpool inflicting the embarrassing result.

The 24-year-old played the full 90 minutes as Divock Origi scored a hat-trick, Daniel Sturridge bagged two and Jordan Ibe got in on the act in the meeting last month.

That appearance was to be the last of Caulker's loan spell at Southampton. During his time at St Mary's the QPR defender failed to hold down a place in the first team, playing a total of eight games for Saints, involving just three Premier League matches. Clean sheets were kept in a 0-0 draw with Watford and 1-0 win over Sunderland. The other match saw Saints lose 3-1 to Manchester City.

Caulker was also involved in three Europa League games, again keeping clean sheets in two of them.

Jurgen Klopp moved for the former Cardiff defender with 11 players sidelined, including defenders Jordan Ibe, Dejan Lovren, Mamadou Sakho, Martin Skrtel, Joe Gomez and Jon Flanagan.
