Sunderland vs Swansea City reaction: Ki Sung-yueng offers advice to Gus Poyet

Sunderland have been warned by the man who made them tick last season that it will take time if they want to play like Swansea City, who held them to a goalless draw at the Stadium of Light on Saturday.

Ki Sung-yueng, the Swansea midfielder who impressed on Wearside during a season- long loan, was back to frustrate his former colleagues.

“Swansea have had this style a long time now and it doesn’t happen straight away,” the South Korean said.

“When Gus [Poyet] came in he tried to build a team with a passing game. The style has changed under him. Last year sometimes it worked and sometimes not. They passed the ball around against us but they were not against a Swansea side at our best.

“Swansea have tried to play this type of game all the time, not just one season like Sunderland under Gus. It takes time to get it right. The fans have to be patient; it will be worth it in the end.”

Poyet took satisfaction from an improved performance even though his side again came up short, stuttering to a fifth draw in six Premier League matches.

Swansea, who were reduced to 10 men late on when right-back Angel Rangel was dismissed for a second bookable offence, never really looked like scoring; but they rose to fifth place in the table, showing the home side what is possible if they can get it right in the final third of the field.
