Swansea vs Newcastle match report: Jefferson Montero runs riot in comfortable win for Swans

Garry Monk this week hailed Jefferson Montero as the best one-on-one attacker in the Premier League. Daryl Janmaat is unlikely to disagree after a challenging day against the jet-heeled winger cut short by his sending-off.

Montero, having given Branislav Ivanovic the runaround at Stamford Bridge last weekend, tormented the Dutchman, leading to two needless bookings, which reduced Newcastle to 10 men four minutes before the interval and all but ended this game as a contest.

Swansea already led thanks to Bafétimbi Gomis’ seventh goal in his last eight Premier League games. The French striker latched onto Jonjo Shelvey’s fine pass and rounded Tim Krul to score.

The points were sealed when Montero’s cross allowed André Ayew to power home a second seven minutes after the interval.

Monk, the Swansea manager, said: “Good teams back up performances and we delivered on that. Jeff contributed well again. They basically tried to kick him.

“In the end their player was rightly sent off. Jeff was exceptional today.”

Swansea, after their opening-day draw against champions Chelsea, took a deserved lead when Shelvey’s pass dissected Chancel Mbemba and Fabricio Coloccini for Gomis to finish.

Janmaat had already robustly challenged Montero, and a second foul earned him his first booking. He escaped another when the winger wriggled away from a scything lunge, but the lesson was not heeded and he grabbed the Ecuador winger’s shirt after losing the ball to earn an early bath.

Montero and Gylfi Sigurdsson were been denied by post and bar either side of the interval, but the diminutive wide man soon made the game safe. Mbemba was beaten for pace and Ayew rose expertly to power a header into the far corner for his second goal in two Swansea appearances.

“I thought it was a harsh red card, it was a long way from goal,” said Newcastle boss Steve McClaren. It was a little tug.

“It’s emotional control that’s cost us, but we are not capable of kicking people.”
