Tottenham Hotspur: Danny Rose reveals Erik Lamela's 'disgust' with top four doubts as Spurs title belief grows

The 25-year-old left-back scored the winner as Spurs overturned a one-goal deficit to defeat Swansea City

Tottenham Hotspur’s Danny Rose has recalled the moment he expressed doubt over their top-four credentials with Érik Lamela, only to be greeted with “disgust” from his Argentine team-mate.

The 25-year-old left-back scored the winner as Spurs overturned a one-goal deficit to defeat Swansea City on Sunday and move within two points of Premier League leaders Leicester City.

Mauricio Pochettino, the Tottenham manager, has banished any talk of lifting a first title since 1961 and Rose admits he is wary of becoming “carried away” by their success.

When asked about their chances of winning the League, the Leeds United youth academy graduate defender said: “I refuse to believe... no, I’d like to believe we can, but I don’t want to think that.

“Before the Manchester City game [which Spurs won 2-1] I was having dinner with Érik Lamela and I was still asking him if he reckoned we can finish top four. I’ve never seen someone look at me with such disgust. He said: ‘My friend, we can win the league.’

“I realise the position we are in but I don’t want to get too carried away. Games like the one Leicester had on Saturday [a 1-0 win against Norwich], with them scoring in the last minute, you never know, it could be a pivotal moment for them.

“Come the end of the season, I hope me scoring the winner against Swansea can be a pivotal moment for Tottenham. I hope it’s a vital goal. I haven’t seen a goalkeeping performance like Łukasz Fabiański’s in my whole career. But we showed a great attitude and we didn’t go under.”
