Tottenham new stadium: Spurs confirm Arsenal fixture moved to Wembley

Tottenham have confirmed that the home Premier League match with rivals Arsenal will be played at Wembley, not their new stadium.

The Gunners were set to travel to their north London rivals on March 2, but as work continues to overrun the fixture has been rearranged.

"We can today report that remedial works on the safety systems in the new stadium are near completion and we shall then move forward to the final stages of testing the fire detection and alarm system and its integration with the other safety systems," a club statement read.

"The success of this testing is critical to our ability to obtain a safety certificate and open the stadium.

"We can confirm, therefore, that we shall play our Premier League match against Arsenal on Saturday 2 March at 12.30pm at Wembley Stadium."

Chairman Daniel Levy added: "Once again, thank you all for bearing with us and for the great support we have received from so many different quarters. These next few weeks are pivotal."

The delays continue with the club are still waiting for official clearance to play in their new White Hart Lane home.

They will not get the safety certificates they need from Haringey Council until they host two test events there, to prove that issues with the security systems have been sorted out.

Spurs host Crystal Palace two weeks after Arsenal, currently scheduled for 16 March, with that game the new target for the new ground’s opening fixture, six months after the first pencilled-in opening.

Tottenham initially hoped to be in the new ground early on in this season, initially pencilling in the Premier League game with Liverpool on 15 September. Subsequently there were hopes to open the new stadium with Burnley on 15 December or then Manchester United on 13 January, but each potential target date has been pushed back again. After Crystal Palace, Spurs only have four more Premier League home games scheduled this season.
