Hugo Lloris says Jose Mourinho’s Tottenham Hotspur ‘mission’ is to end long silverware drought

Injured Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper Hugo Lloris has said that Jose Mourinho’s mission in north London is to end the club’s long trophy drought.

Spurs reached the Champions League final last season under Mauricio Pochettino and the club won the League Cup in 1999 and 2008, but their last triumph beyond that competition was the FA Cup in 1991.

Spurs are currently struggling for form under new manager Mourinho and yet club captain Lloris has insisted the entire squad is desperate to finally win some silverware.

“He’s got a specific mission, which is to get what we lack: a trophy,” he told L’Equipe.

“We want to continue with what we’ve done in recent years, playing magnificent football, getting close to some of the greatest teams, but without rewards for our efforts.

“At the same time, I have always thought since I was 17 that the influence of the players is the most important thing. That stopping the negative spiral depends on us.”

Lloris also added the dislocated shoulder he suffered against Brighton in October is the worst he has suffered in his career.

“I had never felt pain like it,” he said. “I think the morphine took a long time to work and I’m not sure the gas I was given when I was on the pitch worked. I was only relieved at the hospital.”
