Tottenham Hotspur have admitted they are interested in signing the Leeds striker Robbie Keane. The Spurs manager, Glenn Hoddle, is reportedly lining up an £8m bid for the Republic of Ireland international. Leeds had agreed a similar fee with Sunderland earlier this month, but the player turned down a move to the Stadium of Light.

The Tottenham director of football, David Pleat, admitted that Keane was on Spurs' transfer shortlist. "We are keeping abreast of the situation," he said.

The 22-year-old scored for Leeds in a 5-1 friendly win over the Chinese side Green Town FC in Hangzhou yesterday as the club kicked off their tour of the Far East and Australia.

Keane is settled at Elland Road and was hoping to prove his worth to the new Leeds manager, Terry Venables. However, the other scorers in Leeds' friendly win yesterday – Harry Kewell, Mark Viduka, and Robbie Fowler among them – illustrate the attacking talent at Leeds.

The Arsenal goalkeeper Richard Wright should make a decision on whether he wants to move to Everton today. The two clubs have agreed an initial transfer fee of £3.5m and the move now depends on Wright, who underwent a medical yesterday.

Eidur Gudjohnsen's agent has confirmed that the Icelandic striker could leave Chelsea because of a dispute over his salary. The Independent yesterday disclosed that Chelsea were considering selling Gudjohnsen for around £15m.

"I'm not putting a gun to [Chelsea's] heads, but if Eidur doesn't get a rise, we'll have to assess his situation," Peter Harrison, Gudjohnsen's agent said. "I don't know if he'll get a rise as it's difficult for Chelsea financially. But I've got to look after my client."

The Aston Villa manager, Graham Taylor, has signed the French midfielder David Linares from under the noses of neighbours Birmingham City. The 26-year-old, who helped Lyon to the French title last season, was due to appear for Steve Bruce's side in a friendly at Motherwell tonight with a view to a Bosman free transfer move. However, Linares landed in the Midlands yesterday and headed for talks with Villa after the deal was hijacked by a rival agent.

Taylor is also closing in on Hibernian's Ecuador World Cup player Ulises de la Cruz.

Newcastle's injury-prone striker Carl Cort has been ruled out of the club's pre-season tour of the Netherlands following another setback. The £7m striker had just recovered from a slight hamstring injury, but is now suffering from tendinitis in his right knee.

Manchester United are making their second "signing" of the summer, the Gambian striker Arthur Gomez, who impressed during a trial at Old Trafford last season.

Gomez will join United's feeder side Royal Antwerp from his club Hawks and he will play with them for a season or so before heading for the Premiership. It is the first time United have found a player to use this system, which they set up three years ago. Previously Antwerp had just been a place to send their fringe men such as Luke Chadwick for experience.
