Dele Alli has lost his battle to be fit in time for Tottenham's Champions League game at PSV Eindhoven, manager Mauricio Pochettino has confirmed.

The England midfielder, who last played on September 26, is still recovering from a hamstring problem. Alli had not been expected to be fit for Saturday's London derby at West Ham but hopes he could return for the must-win trip to the Netherlands have now been dashed as well.

Instead, Tottenham's medical staff will concentrate on maximising his chances of being available for the Premier League meeting with current leaders Manchester City, at Wembley on Monday October 29.

Left-back Danny Rose's groin problem will keep him sidelined for a further 10 days, Pochettino added.

Christian Eriksen, out since September 22 because of an abdominal problem, is fit to face the Hammers however. Fellow midfielder Mousa Dembele is also back in contention following a thigh injury but defender Jan Vertonghen remains a longer-term absentee.

"It was a good time for us because we are going to recover a few players like Christian and Mousa Dembele," said Pochettino of the international break. "It is still maybe 10 days more for Dele Alli and Danny Rose is one week more. Jan Vertonghen is a little bit longer.

"It will be a tough month of competition for us. There are a lot of games ahead and it’s so important to have nearly all the squad fit to compete and play and to give options to rotate and share the games. We have seven games in four weeks, and it’s so important to have all fit to compete and to give the level that we want."

Tottenham have won their last four London derbies in the Premier League, including a 3-1 success over Fulham in August. Five in a row has not been achieved since 1961.

West Ham are likely to pose a sterner test than the Cottagers however, having spent £100million on nine new players in a summer transfer window that saw Tottenham neither add not subtract to their pool.

Chairman Daniel Levy told a meeting of the Tottenham Supporters' Trust that the new stadium at White Hart Lane will not affect the recruitment of new players.

Levy insisted the club had a "certain amount earmarked for transfers" and had based the summer window on "certain assumptions that some players might be leaving and certain targets would be available".

Pochettino certainly wasn't going to say otherwise. "I am never going to judge the words of my boss," he said. "He is the owner of the club, I am not going to judge.

"It was difficult to achieve the players we needed. That was impossible. I was happy and am happy with the squad that I have, 25 players.

"When we started the season with three games that we won and we were top of the table people were talking in a different way, 'Oh how clever are Tottenham because they keep all the squad from last season'. After we lost some games all the alarms started to make a big impact in the perception.

"But I need to remind everyone that is our best start after eight games, it is the best start in the Premier League for Tottenham. We have one more point than last season.

"We are fifth and the ambition is to be on top but we are realistic and after all the circumstances in the summer, we keep fighting and we are very close to the top of the table. Always try to be ambitious and win games."
