Vincent Kompany limps off on Manchester City return with yet another injury scare

It was the City captain's first game for five months

Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany could be set for another spell on the sidelines after suffering an injury scare on his return after a five-month layoff.

Kompany returned to the starting line-up as City eased past Swansea 2-1 in the EFL Cup third round thanks to goals from Gael Clichy and Aleix Garcia.

However, the Belgian’s injury soured City’s evening as he left the field by his own choice in injury time even though all three substitutes had already been used.

Kompany has been missing since limping off in Manchester City’s Champions League semi-final defeat to Real Madrid at the start of May with a groin injury, which also caused him to miss Euro 2016.

Speaking after the game on Wednesday, manager Pep Guardiola said: "The doctors are speaking with him, but hopefully it is not a big, big problem. We're going to wait for the result.

"Once they scored the goal, after I said: 'What happened?'. They said that Vincent had gone to the locker room.

“Hopefully, it will not be a big problem. We will have to wait. If he's injured, he's injured. He cannot stay on the pitch.

"It's not easy after a long, long time without playing. Defensively, he was so strong - he played really good."

It is the latest in a long list of injuries Kompany has picked up, notably a recurring calf problem, which has meant he has only made 39 Premier League appearances since lifting the trophy at the end of the 2013/14 season.
