Watford vs Tottenham: Mauricio Pochettino rules out any new Spurs January recruits

Mauricio Pochettino insists he is "happy" with his Tottenham squad and does not need to strengthen in January.

Pochettino downplayed links to Ross Barkley, Isco and Wilfried Zaha, suggesting Spurs already boast enough power in their attacking midfield ranks.

The Argentinian boss remains confident Tottenham can still fight for the Premier League title despite sitting 10 points behind pace-setters Chelsea.

"No, no, no; I don't expect to do some business, because I am happy with the squad that I have," said Pochettino on the chance of Spurs making any January signings.

"I think it's not the right moment. Only if it's a person who will definitely benefit us - otherwise, no."

Former Southampton boss Pochettino revealed he has no plans to send defender Kevin Wimmer on loan next month.

Spurs have again been linked with January moves for Real Madrid's Isco, Everton's Barkley and Crystal Palace's Zaha, but Pochettino remains convinced he already has enough quality with Dele Alli, Christian Eriksen and Erik Lamela in his squad.

"I don't know where that rumour (about Barkley) has come from," he added.

"It's not from myself or from my staff, that is sure. Then if some people from the club created that rumour, I don't know, or if it's from outside.

"We are very calm and consistent with our philosophy, and the way we are developing our game.

"We cannot stop rumours, and we cannot confirm every time whether rumours are true or otherwise."

When quizzed on whether anyone would leave Tottenham in the new year, he replied: "I don't expect that. It's not sensible.

"We are not talking about a loan (for Wimmer). For me I am happy with him. He's still very young, we brought him not only for the present but also for the future."

Kyle Walker and Jan Vertonghen will miss Spurs' New Year's Day trip to Watford through suspension, though Toby Alderweireld has recovered from a virus.

Vertonghen has escaped any Football Association punishment after catching Jay Rodriguez in the face during Spurs' 4-1 win at Southampton on December 28, but misses Sunday's game against Watford after being booked for the fifth time this season during the Saints match.

Tottenham boss Pochettino felt it was right that Vertonghen avoided further punishment, and hailed Southampton forward Rodriguez for not over-reacting to the incident.

"Maybe in the first moment you can say 'oh it was intentional' but when you look back on it, you see he didn't realise it," said Pochettino.

"And the reaction of Rodriguez was very fair with Jan. They talk. And I'm happy the FA took no action against Jan.

"I think I want to say that Rodriguez's behaviour was like a team-mate, which was fantastic."
