Averladze's golden shot breaks the hearts of dominant Celtic

Shota Arveladze proved to be the golden shot that broke Celtic's dominance at Ibrox last night, as he plundered the goal in extra-time that settled an epic CIS Insurance Cup quarter-final.

The Rangers substitute ended a run of seven derby defeats by snatching the winner in the 99th minute, firing a low shot past David Marshall after Fernando Ricksen had broken from his own half.

Rangers had looked threatening for most of the second half, but it was Celtic who broke the deadlock in the 66th minute.

Stan Varga had just struck the bar from eight yards out with a shot that he steered past Klos, only to see the rebound hacked away for a corner. Alan Thompson flighted a perfect corner to the back post where Hartson outmuscled Marvin Andrews and thumped a venomous header high past Klos to uncork scenes of celebration from the visiting fans.

Ibrox was cloaked in frustration as Celtic took the sting out of the game, but six minutes from the end Rangers equalised, as Hamed Namouchi's fierce shot was parried by Marshall and Dado Prso scored with the rebound.

Celtic sat deep in the first half as their compact defence soaked up Rangers' fierce pressure. Nacho Novo would have scored after just four minutes when he pounced on a mistake by Joos Valgaeren but his shot was saved by David Marshall, the goalkeeper using his knees.

Peter Lovenkrands then came close before Zurab Khizanishvili burst into the box but tugged his shot wide of the post. It was fully 20 minutes before Celtic summoned up an attack, but it was a meaningful one, as John Hartson rose at the back post to meet Alan Thompson's free-kick but the downward header bounced up and over the bar.

Ten minutes before the interval, Novo forced another save out of Marshall as the deadlock persisted.
