Queen of the South claimed their first-ever cup final victory as they saw off Brechin in style to capture the Bell's Challenge Cup in Clyde yesterday.

"This is as high up as anything I've ever done, including as a player," said a jubilant Queen of the South manager, John Connolly. "I've played at the highest level and been capped for Scotland, but this is as good as anything in my career."

John O'Neil opened the scoring in controversial circumstances after 33 minutes. The Brechin City defender Greig McCulloch claimed he had hooked the ball clear off the line but the referee John Underhill awarded the goal.

The Dumfries side then added a second two minutes after half-time, Derek Lyle's six-yard header giving the Brechin keeper David Hay no chance and sealing victory for Connolly and Queen of the South.
