Gary Neville has criticised Manchester United’s communication following their exit from the European Super League.

United were one of the 12 leading European clubs to commit to joining a new breakaway competition intended to rival the Champions League.

The move came in for heavy criticism from fans and politicians alike with football figures such as Gary Neville hugely vocal in their opposition.

United, alongside the other five ‘big six’ Premier League clubs - Liverpool, Manchester City, Chelsea, Tottenham and Arsenal - then proceeded to climb down officially walking away from the proposal on Tuesday evening.

Neville, however, wasn’t pleased with the manner of United’s exit, delivered with a three-line statement on the club website.

“I’ve read this 3-4 times now,” he said of the statement. “Quite possibly the worst communication I’ve ever seen in my life!”

“Manchester United will not be participating in the European Super League,” the statement read.

“We have listened carefully to the reaction from our fans, the UK government and other key stakeholders.

“We remain committed to working with others across the football community to come up with sustainable solutions to the long-term challenges facing the game.”

Speaking on Sky Sports prior to United’s official withdrawal, Neville said: “It’s absolutely incredible.

“There was large concern yesterday morning as a Manchester United fan thinking Joel Glazer put his name on a statement - you thought it’s going to be difficult to back down.

“But City have enacted withdrawal proceedings and Chelsea are doing the same. It’s gone, done!”
