Liverpool’s hopes of signing Alex Teixeira during this transfer window are fading fast.

Shakhtar Donetsk are determined to keep hold of the 26-year-old striker until the end of the season and tonight’s 11.00pm deadline is fast approaching.

The Ukrainian Premier League leaders will only let Teixeira leave if his release clause of £53million is met, a figure which Reds chief executive Ian Ayre is reluctant to pay.

A move is now 'unlikely' to be completed today, according to Sky Sports, and it seems as though the Brazilian will only be allowed to leave the Donbass Arena in the summer.

And so, after much initial excitement over their club’s interest, Liverpool supporters are starting to get that familiar sensation of deadline day disappointment.

The club have previously missed out on the likes of Willian, Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Yevhen Konoplyanka when attempting to buy from eastern Europe. Now they can add Teixeira to that list of near misses and supporters have been registering their anger on social media all morning.

Here’s a selection of the best Twitter reaction…

Some, at least, are able to see the funny side…

Wishful thinking...
