Arsene Wenger has assured Arsenal supporters he is prepared to spend in the transfer market after the Emirates crowd made their feelings known during the opening day defeat by Liverpool.

The Frenchman has made just three signings this summer, headlined by the £30m acquisition of Granit Xhaka from Borussia Monchengladbach, but he has missed out of various targets, including Jamie Vardy and Gonzalo Higuain.

Speaking ahead of this weekend's Premier League clash against champions Leicester City, who confirmed last night they have persuaded Riyad Mahrez to agree a new four-year contract, Wenger moved to calm the tension among the north London club's fan base.

“I can reassure people we're ready to spend the money we have,” Wenger said. “It is dangerous. English clubs suffocate themselves by buying players at a high price with high wages, if it goes wrong you are left with players with high wages.

“The identity of the buyer multiplies transfers by two or three or even 10 times more. It's important to spend money but more important to spend it the right way.

“There are two markets, one for English clubs, one for the rest of Europe.”

When asked about the protracted deal to sign Valencia defender Shkodran Mustafi, Wenger added: “I believe it is better I don't talk about any individual player. We are ready to spend the money we have. It's not my money. It's important to spend money the right way.

“It was important before the game [to sign a defender]. You do not sign players because you think it's very important or not.

“I think it's very difficult to find players and identify them. That's why everyone is on the market for the same players and the deals.”
