Arsenal make fresh enquiry for Sporting Lisbon's William Carvalho

Arsenal have resumed their pursuit of Sporting Lisbon midfielder William Carvalho after making a new enquiry about the players’ availability, according to reports.

The Gunners are in need of a defensive midfielder and Arsene Wenger is said to be interested in the 22-year-old over other options, including Sami Khedira.

The stumbling block for the signing will be Sporting’s valuation of the player.

The Portuguese club are hoping to persuade Arsenal to pay Carvalho’s £35m release clause.

The midfielder’s current contract runs until 2018 but the release clause is an option for Arsenal if they are willing to pay that sum.

Carvalho, who has six international caps to his name, played in Portugal’s 2-1 victory over Ghana in their last group game of the World Cup.

He has been a long-term target of Manchester United but now Arsenal seem to be front-runners for his signature.

The player came up through Sporting's youth system and played a prominent role in the starting line-up last season.
