Arsenal will not sign Alexandre Lacazette this summer and look increasingly unlikely to land a striker before next week’s transfer window deadline after Lyon insisted the France international will remain with the club for the 2016/17 season.

Lyon president Jean-Michel Aulas confirmed on Tuesday that Lacazette will not be joining Arsenal or any other club as he remains a senior member of the first-team, with Arsenal’s interest in a summer move now appearing to be over.

Asked by French newspaper RMC Sport if 25-year-old Lacazette will remain at Lyon, Aulas said: “Of course. Alexander is one of the senior players in the team.”

With Arsenal also facing frustration in their hunt for a new defender given that Valencia are now refusing to sell Shkodran Mustafi for anything below his €50m release clause, the Premier League side are believed to have renewed interest in Roma defender Kostas Manolas.

The 25-year-old centre-back was watched by Arsenal scouts in last night’s 3-0 Champions League play-off defeat by Porto, according to the Daily Mail, and with Roma no longer able to offer the Greece international Champions League football due to their elimination, Arsenal could try to lure him to the Emirates.

Arsenal have previously shown interest in Manolas along with Chelsea, but given that manager Arsene Wenger is desperate to bring in a new defender, he could look to Manolas as the solution to his problems at the back. Per Mertesacker and Gabriel Paulista are injured for the foreseeable future, and with questions over the form of Calum Chambers, Wenger has been forced to deploy summer signing Rob Holding alongside Laurent Koscielny at centre-back.

Another defender that the Gunners were linked with this week is Monaco’s Marcel Tisserand, but The Mirror claims that reigning Premier League champions Leicester City could rival them for the 23-year-old. Tisserand is able to deputise at right-back as well as in the middle of the defence, and he was left on the bench by Monaco for Tuesday night’s Champions League victory over Villarreal having struggled to break into the first team under Leonardo Jardim.

Tisserand was on the verge of joining La Liga side Espanyol, but the move has been delayed with his representatives keen to see if Arsenal’s interest is genuine, having already made an enquiry over his availability.
