Former Chelsea, Arsenal and England star Ashley Cole will be joining former international team-mate Steven Gerrard with the Los Angeles Galaxy.

Cole, 35, had his contract terminated by AS Roma last week after failing to settle in Italy and despite being tentatively linked with Manchester United, always appeared likely to move to Major League Soccer. He last played for Roma in March last year.

The Stepney-born left-back made more than 500 appearances for Arsenal and Chelsea, winning the Premier League three times, seven FA Cups as well as playing a starring role as the Blues lifted the Champions League in 2012.

He is also one of England's most decorated players and is sixth on the all-time list of appearances with 107.

"Ashley is one of the world's most successful defenders and has played at the highest level of competition throughout his career," said Galaxy coach Bruce Arians.

"He can provide our defence with valuable experience. We look forward to his contribution to our club this season."

Cole, of course, has never been the most popular of figures on these shores, and his move was again met with derision:

Former Chelsea team-mate Frank Lampard is also in the MLS with New York City FC, while former Premier League star Robbie Keane will be another LA Galaxy team-mate.
