Chelsea transfer news: Sell-on fees 'oversight could cost club millions'

The Blues look set to miss out on a considerable sum if the Everton striker leaves Goodison Park in the near future

Chelsea face missing out on millions of pounds after their failure to secure a sell-on fee clause in the transfer of Romelu Lukaku was revealed.

The Belgian joined Everton in 2014, for £28m, and has found his value skyrocket in the time which has since elapsed. Lukaku, now worth an estimated £40m to the Merseyside club, has been the subject of interest from Juventus and Real Madrid.

As a result of the Blues’ oversight, part of transactions negotiated by club director Marina Granovskaia, the west London outfit will not to receive a penny should a move come to fruition. Revealed on Thursday morning by the Times, Chelsea are destined to miss out on millions if Lukaku moves on. Manchester United are believed to be among the chasing pack.

The 22-year-old signed at Stamford Bridge in 2011 for a fee in the region of £18m and left for Goodison Park at the inception of last season for £10m more, representing a club record for the Toffees.

The 22-year-old is presently the Premier League’s joint top goal-scorer, level with Leicester City’s Jamie Vardy, on 15 goals in 19 appearances.

Granovskaia, the Russian negotiator who has played an pivotal role in helping Chelsea secure £107m in player sales over the past two campaigns, is a close ally of owner Roman Abramovich.

Sell-on clauses have become more prominent in recent seasons with notable cases including the £5.75m received by Bournemouth, then a second-tier club, when Liverpool signed Adam Lallana from Southampton for £23m in 2014.
