David De Gea to Real Madrid: Louis van Gaal says 'we will see' if goalkeeper will leave Manchester United and defender costly error

De Gea was at fault for the opening goal against PSG but Van Gaal feels that the transfer speculation over a move to PSG is not helping the goalkeeper

Louis van Gaal has leapt to the defence of David De Gea after his error allowed Blaiuse Matuidi to score the opening goal in Manchester United's 2-0 defeat to Paris Saint-Germain in the International Champions Cup.

De Gea has been heavily linked with a move to Real Madrid with the Spanish club eager to bring the goalkeeper back to his homeland. Having allowed Iker Casillas to leave the club in order to join FC Porto, Real have made De Gea their top transfer target of the summer in another public pursuit.

De Gea missed United’s first two pre-season matches against Club America and San Jose Earthquakes, but a reported back injury cleared up in time for the 24-year-old to feature against both Barcelona and PSG.

While United secured an impressive 3-1 victory over the Catalans, PSG proved to be a step too far for Van Gaal’s developing side, as they succumbed to a 2-0 defeat that saw the Parisians lift the International Champions Cup ahead of the new pre-season. De Gea has since come in for some criticism for his mistake that allowed Matuidi to open the scoring, but De Gea has defended the Spaniard for committing nothing more than a “mistake”.

"Poor I cannot say but he [De Gea] made a mistake,” said the United manager. “That's not poor. Everybody can make mistakes but when a goalkeeper makes a mistake it is mostly a goal and that's the difference."

However, Van Gaal did admit that the current predicament surrounding his future is not ideal for anyone, including Real. With over a month left to run in the transfer window, the De Gea saga looks set to run on and on, and with the goalkeeper in the final year of his contract United are beginning to face up to the prospect of losing him on a free transfer next summer.

"We have a situation that is not favourable for David De Gea but neither for us and neither for the club that maybe he wants to go [to]", Van Gaal added.

When asked further whether De Gea will leave this summer for Real, Van Gaal answered: "We have to wait and see".
