Everton transfer news: Toffees approach Burnley in move for goalkeeper Tom Heaton as Tim Howard's future thrown into doubt
Howard's ex-wife has returned to the United States with his children prompting doubts over his future at Goodison Park
Everton have made inquiries about Burnley goalkeeper Tom Heaton, with Tim Howard's future at Goodison Park now unclear.
Howard’s ex-wife’s return to the United States with the couple’s children has created the uncertainty about the 36-year-old’s intentions and the quality of Heaton’s performances in Burnley’s relegation season are thought to have impressed Everton manager Roberto Martinez.
Howard has always been clear about the significance of his family, taking a year away international football last August to spend more time with his children and it is unclear whether he will now look to a future beyond Merseyside. Heaton has two years left to run on his contract at Turf Moor.
Martinez’s No 2 keeper Joel Robles had looked capable when stepping up last season though the Spanish manager was quick to restore Howard. The American worked with Heaton at Manchester United, when Heaton was young player in the reserve team during Howard’s time working for Sir Alex Ferguson and ironically Howard pointed out his qualities last season.
“He's [Heaton] had a fantastic season," Howard said."It's very tough being in the position Burnley find themselves in. It's a credit to Tom and the way he has kept going. I was with Tom at Manchester United – he was a young kid in the reserve team – and he has done very well for himself and had a good career since he left Manchester United."
