Filipe Luis latest: Chelsea 'step up' interest in move for £19m Atletico Madrid left back

Jose Mourinho wants Luis to replace departed Ashley Cole, according to reports

Chelsea have re-entered negotiations to sign Brazilian defender Filipe Luis from Atletico Madrid, according to reports.

Ashley Cole joined Roma earlier this week and Ryan Bertrand is likely to leave the club this summer, with a number of Premier League clubs chasing, leaving Chelsea without a recognised left back.

The Daily Telegraph state Chelsea have stepped up their interest in the 28-year-old.

Luis, who was not selected by Luiz Felipe Scolari for Brazil's World Cup squad, was excellent for Diego Simeone last year and was a linchpin for a team that won La Liga for the first time in 18 years.

Atletico's team was typified by their mean defence, which conceded just 26 goals in 38 matches.

However, there is a potential hiccup in the deal with Chelsea not willing to meet the £19m release clause Luis has in his contract.

The Blues are trying to strike a deal with Atletico with whom they have an excellent relationship, after the Thibaut Courtois loan spell and the signing of Diego Costa earlier this summer.

Chelsea have identified Argentina and Sporting Lisbon left back Marcos Rojo as a possible alternative should the two clubs reach an agreement on Luis.

Last season Jose Mourinho opted to make Cesar Azpilicueta his first choice left back, despite his natural position being on the other flank.

Chelsea are also reportedly interested in another foward, with moves for Ezequiel Lavezzi and Antoine Griezmann being considered.
