Jesse Lingard has backed “brilliant” Jadon Sancho to be a “great addition” at any club, as Manchester United pursue a deal for the Borussia Dortmund forward.

Sancho is understood to be eager to leave Dortmund this summer, with the Premier League as his preferred destination, and the Bundesliga club are willing to sell at the right price.

United’s ability to lure the 20-year-old to Old Trafford is likely to depend on whether or not Ole Gunnar Solskjaer can secure Champions League qualification for next season.

Lingard has experience of playing alongside the 20-year-old at international level with England and believes he would be an asset at any elite club.

“Jadon is a brilliant player,” Lingard said. “It’s obviously up to him. I’ve seen him with England, I’ve seen his qualities and I feel like he’d be a great addition to any team.”

Solskjaer’s side require a point against fellow top-four contenders Leicester City on Sunday, or else they will need to win next month’s Europa League mini-tournament in Germany.

Lingard has found himself on the periphery of late, with only two appearances to his name since the restart last month, but he remains excited about the future at United.

“I feel like we’re moving in the right direction now and a trophy would be perfect,” Lingard added. “That’s one of our main goals. We don’t really think about who we’re playing, we’d rather focus on ourselves.

“We know what we need to do to get the job done and get through, so we’d rather focus on us.”
