Manchester United target Kevin Strootman says that he would like to play for Real Madrid or Barcelona.

The Roma midfielder has been linked to re-unite with Louis van Gaal at Manchester United in January after the player has fully recovered from his cruciate ligament injury that ruled him out of playing for the Netherlands in the World Cup.

He has since made two Serie A appearances for Roma this month, but says that his future does not lie with the Italian side.

"I do not see Roma as an intermediate point in my career," he told Voetbal International. "Of course, a player who plays well here can showcase themselves sooner.

"Everyone wants to play with Real Madrid or Barcelona, but these big clubs are not scouting in Netherlands."

Van Gaal would have reportedly brought Strootman, who he coached during his days at national team manager, to United in the summer, but the player suffered the injury on the eve of the World Cup finals.
