Pep Guardiola pleased with Man City win over Arsenal

Leroy Sané has rejected Manchester City’s latest contract offer and wants to leave the club, Pep Guardiola has confirmed.

Sane hopes to join Bayern Munich and could leave this season or when his contract expires in the summer of 2021 after resisting City’s attempts to extend his stay in Manchester.

The Germany international was heavily linked with Bayern last summer before suffering knee ligament damage during the Community Shield which ruled him out for seven months.

Guardiola said he is “so disappointed” that Sané wants to leave City and described the 2018 PFA Young Player of the Year as a “special” talent.

“Leroy has said he doesn’t want to extend his contract next season. He wants to leave,” the City manager revealed on Friday.

“That will either happen this summer or when he is out of contract. The club spoke to Leroy two or three times to extend his contract. He rejected. He wants to play at another club.

“The club said to me that Leroy has rejected the contract and like everyone knows if at the end of the season both clubs arrive at an agreement he’ll leave, if not then he’ll stay one more year and then leave at the end of his contract.”

Guardiola added: “I am so disappointed. Of course when we make an offer to players it’s because we want him, he is a young player with incredible potential.

“He has special quality that is hard to find around the world, but we tried before the injury and after that but he rejected. He has other wishes and I understand. I said many times we want players who want to play at this club, who want to play with us, want to fully commit to try to achieve our targets but we respect him.

“He is an incredibly nice guy. I love him. I love him so much, he’s so educated, nice family so I don’t have nothing against him. He just decided he wanted to make another adventure for his career and he doesn’t want to stay.

“When that happens we will help him until the last day that he is here and going to count for the players who want to stay here.”

Sané has appeared to be nearing an exit from the Etihad since the end of last season and changed representatives earlier this year in a bid to secure a move to Bayern.

The 24-year-old, who joined City from Schalke 04 for £37m in 2016, has not made a first-team appearance since August due to his cruciate ligament injury.

Sané was an unused substitute during Wednesday’s win over Arsenal, despite new rules following Project Restart which allow Premier League side to use up to five substitutes.
