Liverpool sign Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain as Reds announce £40m deal with Arsenal for England midfielder

Liverpool have completed the signing of midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain from Premier League rivals Arsenal in a deal worth up to £40m.

The 24-year-old England international underwent a medical at St George's park on Thursday morning, where he is with the England squad ahead of Friday's 2018 World Cup qualifier against Malta, and put pen to paper on a deal understood to be worth £120,000-a-week.

“I’m currently away with England, so I’m at St George’s Park. Firstly, I’m delighted to have signed for Liverpool and a big thank-you to everyone here at the Football Association that has made this possible, using the facilities. It has been a massive help,” Oxlade-Chamberlain said in an official statement.

“I’m not going to say too much today; I’m here with England and we’ve got two big games coming up, so I want to focus on them. But I can’t wait to get to Melwood and you’ll hear first from me on LFCTV.”

Oxlade-Chamberlain rejected a move to Chelsea earlier this week, despite being offered more money by the reigning Premier League champions, due to his desire to play in a central midfield role as opposed to the wing-back berth he would occupy at Stamford Bridge. That has also been the problem at Arsenal, where Arsene Wenger has moved him to the same position on the right of his defence when losing to Leicester City, Stoke City and Liverpool this month.

The former Southampton academy graduate leaves Arsenal having run into the final year of his contract, following his decision to reject a £180,000-a-week deal from the Gunners earlier in the summer.

His move to Anfield will also see Southampton net around £2m due to a sell-on clause iin the deal they signed with Arsenal in 2011, and sees him become the third new addition to Jürgen Klopp's side this summer following the additions of Mohamed Salah and Andrew Robertson.
