Shakhtar Donetsk have told Liverpool that they will have to meet Alex Teixeira’s release clause of £53million if they wish to sign him.

The Merseyside club’s initial £24.6million bid was rejected last week and, according to The Guardian, a new offer will be submitted in the coming days. The 26-year-old forward, who has scored is also being tracked by Chelsea.

However, Sergiy Palkin, Shakhtar’s general director, insisted in a television interview on Friday that the club would only listen to offers which met the player’s buyout clause and reiterated their desire to only sell the Brazilian at the end of the season.

“Liverpool stopped after an offer of stopped at €32m and a €4m bonus,” he told Football 1. “This is the last number that was announced. Our position is that we do not want to sell Teixeira today.

“We will sell him only at the end of the season. We need to have some good results in the Europa League and the Ukraine championship. At the end of the season we will sit down at the negotiating table.

“Teixeira has a compensation charge in his contract - the price is €70m. Please, if someone wants him - let them come and declare themselves,” he added.

Palkin also revealed that Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp wishes to personally meet Teixeira and attempt to push the deal through.

“I am sure that without the agreement of Klopp there would not be a discussion with Liverpool. He wants to have a personal meeting with Teixeira in Liverpool,” he said.

Earlier this week, Teixeira openly questioned Shakhtar’s decision to prevent him from moving to Liverpool and claimed it would be an honour to play in the club’s shirt.

“It is a huge club. So many great players have passed through there. It would be an honour to defend the Liverpool shirt,” a frustrated Teixeira told Anfield HQ.

“There has only been one offer, €32m (£24.5m), and Shakhtar rejected it. I know my agent is still attempting everything possible to help me get to Liverpool.

“The team received one official offer from Liverpool. It was rejected. I don't know why. It was a great offer. It is frustrating but the manager and the club president decided against it. So now I am just waiting and trying to be patient.”
