Liverpool transfer news: Reds could fill Pepe Reina void with Argentina goalkeeper Sergio Romero - reports

The World Cup finalist could leave Sampdoria after spending last season on loan with French club Monaco

Liverpool are being linked with a move for World Cup finalist goalkeeper Sergio Romero as they look to replace the departed Pepe Reina, according to reports in Italy.

Reina finally left the club on a permanent move as he joined Bayern Munich for just £2m, having spent last season on loan with Napoli under the guidance of his former manager Rafael Benitez. With Simon Mignolet the undoubted number one at Anfield with Brad Jones currently back-up to the Belgian, a move for Romero would see serious competition added to the Reds’ squad.

Italian newspaper Tuttosport reports that Brendan Rodgers will give the go ahead for Liverpool to make a bid for the Sampdoria goalkeeper.

Romero was a constant figure in the Argentinian goal during their run to the final in Brazil, where an extra-time Mario Gotze effort that beat the 27-year-old saw Germany claim the coveted trophy and the crown of being the world champions for the next four years.

Romero joined Sampdoria in 2011 from Duthc side AZ Alkmaar, but spent last season on loan with Monaco in the French league. Despite remaining as Argentina’s number one, he only made three appearances for the principality, and looks to be available this summer on a permanent move.

He’s made 54 appearances for his country since his debut in 2009, given to him by former Argentina manager Diego Maradona for the 1-0 win over Paraguay, and he was awarded the man of the match award for his match-winning performance against the Netherlands last month where he saved two penalties to book their place in the final.

Romero’s form in Brazil was recognised as he was named on the three-man shortlist for the Golden Glove award, which was won by German counterpart Manuel Neuer.
