Lukas Podolski is nearing a move to Inter Milan amid reports that the Arsenal striker is to travel to Italy tonight to discuss the terms of his transfer.

The proposed move of the German World Cup winner was confirmed by Arsene Wenger after the New Year's Day defeat to Southampton, although suggestions that it is already signed and sealed are incorrect according to the longest standing manager in English football.

Discussing talks held between Arsenal and Inter Milan, Wenger said: "The first proposal was farcical; after they came back a bit more serious, then we will see what happens now.

"Inevitable? Not in the transfer market, it's very difficult to say, but we'll see later."

Podolski was left out of the 2-0 loss at St Mary's with a "tight groin" according to Wenger, who insisted Podolski would have had a "big chance to start" in the match had he been fit, despite the ongoing talks over his future.

Because of the injury the 29-year-old, who has been at the Emirates since 2012, would not have been in contention for the FA Cup tie against Hull City on Sunday in any case said Wenger.
