Manchester City transfer news: Vincent Kompany's agent dismisses exit talk ahead of Pep Guardiola arrival

Jacques Lichtenstein expects his client to remain at the Etihad Stadium for the 2016/17 season

Vincent Kompany will not leave Manchester City this summer despite speculation suggesting that incoming head coach Pep Guardiola is willing to sell the club captain, according to the player’s agent.

Jacques Lichtenstein, who represents Kompany, expects the defender to stay on at the Etihad Stadium and does not believe that his client is concerned about his future.

“Vincent is stronger than ever,” he told Belgium’s Sport/Voetbalmagazine. “We are in touch on a daily basis and he’s absolutely not worried about his future. That’s his strength.

“He still has a contract for three seasons, he’s the captain of one of the biggest clubs in the world and he’s convinced his best years are ahead of him.

“He still stays an important player in the squad. The stats are proving it. Why would he be leaving?”

Kompany is currently sidelined with the recurring calf injury which has seen him miss much of the season, including both legs of the Champions League quarter-final tie against Paris Saint-Germain.

Eliaquim Mangala and Nicolas Otamendi have formed Manuel Pellegrini’s first-choice defensive partnership during Kompany’s absence.

Although both have struggled for form, they impressed against the Ligue 1 champions on Tuesday, holding out one of Europe’s most prolific attacks to qualify for the tournament’s semi-finals.

John Stones, Everton’s talented young centre-back, is rumoured to be one of Guardiola’s summer targets, given his ability at playing the ball out from the back.
