Matteo Darmian could be the next Manchester United player to face the exit door after suffering a “complete breakdown” in relationship with manager Jose Mourinho.

The Italian joined United last summer for an undisclosed fee, believed to be £12.7m, and signed a four-year contract with an option to extend it for a further year.

Darmian made a total of 39 appearances in his debut campaign at United in the 2015/16 season after arriving from Torino.

The 26-year-old impressed at times for Louis van Gaal but has struggled to assert himself under Mourinho this season.

According to reports from Tuttosport, there has been a “complete breakdown” in relationship between the two which could be beyond repair.

In light of this fall-out, Darmian stands poised to leave the club, and possibly the Premier League, in the January transfer window.

Juventus have been linked to the Italian and are reportedly willing to sign the defender on loan.

United, however, could demand a permanent £17m transfer for the defender, a fee the Serie A giants are not willing to meet.

Darmian has lost his position in recent weeks to an in-form Antonio Valencia who has cemented his place as the first-choice right back this term.

Despite this fall from grace, Darmian has previously indicated his desire to stay and fight for a spot in a bid to usurp Valencia.

He said: “I think it’s good to have such competition within the squad because there are a lot of good players for every position in a big team.

“You just have to be ready for when the manager gives you a chance. I think Jose is a great manager, he’s very hungry and his victories and successes speak volumes for him.”
