Manchester United transfer news: Memphis Depay set to move after accepting Old Trafford career is over

Memphis Depay has accepted that his Manchester United career could be over and is open to a move away from the club in January.

The Dutchman was left out of United’s 21-man Europa League squad for the 2-1 defeat to Fenerbahce on Thursday evening, despite Jose Mourinho rating the competition at the bottom of his priority list this season.

Depay has failed to live up to his reputation since arriving at Old Trafford for £25m last summer, and has only made four league appearances this season, all of which have been from the bench.

As a result, Depay is considering his options but would likely prefer a loan move away from Old Trafford rather than a permanent one, with Fenerbahce interested.

The Turkish side’s manager, Dick Advocaat, gave Depay his first-team debut at former club PSV Eindhoven and spoke positively about him before this week’s Europa League clash.

“The potential is there for him to be a good player,” said Advocaat.

“You cannot lose that. He has the quality to be a top player but the problem for him is that there are so many quality players in that squad.

“So for himself it is important to start playing regularly at the age that he is at. Otherwise the way, I think, is that maybe he has to find another solution [club] because he is too good to sit on the bench. I still believe in him.

“He has the right mentality, the right character to play for United, but there are so many options there. Regular playing time will help his progression.”
