Paul Pogba’s return to Manchester United is almost complete, if you read between the lines of Jose Mourinho’s comments following Wayne Rooney’s testimonial on Wednesday night.

“We are going to sign one more player, that’s for sure,” he told BT Sport. “I don’t want to speak about Paul because he’s a Juventus player.

“But the reality is that we are going to sign one more player,” he added. “As you know, the market closes on August 31 so we have plenty of time to do that, but obviously I’d like to do it before the season starts.”

Mourinho’s comments imply he wants Pogba within the next 10 days, before United’s opening Premier League game at Bournemouth on 14 August.

Elsewhere, Marcos Rojo rejected an offer to join the Chinese Super League’s Shanghai SIPG, according to the Daily Record.

It is unclear whether this is a recent development – unlikely, given that China’s transfer window closed on 15 July – but Rojo’s decision apparently “complicated” Mourinho’s rebuilding plans.

Phil Jones could also be on the way out, according to the Record’s report.

Hull City want to sign the 24-year-old defender on a year-long loan, with the interest initially instigated by Steve Bruce before he resigned last month.

And what of Bastian Schweinsteiger? The out-of-favour midfielder at least has support at his former club, Bayern Munich.

When asked to react to reports of Schweinsteiger’s demotion to the reserves at United, Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, Bayern’s chief executive, told Bild: "I could hardly believe it.

“One or two players are going to think long and hard in future about whether they want to go to such a club,” he added. "Nothing like that has ever happened at Bayern Munich."
