Memphis Depay is on his way to Manchester United, with his current club PSV Eindhoven confirming the Red Devils have agreed a transfer for the forward.

With Manchester United moving early to confirm their first signing of the summer, they will be hoping he could follow in the footsteps of former Dutch forwards to have graced Old Trafford. Current hit-man Robin van Persie was the key player in United's last title triumph and has been a consistent scorer since joining from Arsenal whilst Ruud van Nistelrooy was among Sir Alex Ferguson's greatest ever signings, notching 150 goals for the club during his time at Old Trafford.

So could Depay make a similar sort of impact?

Now 21-years-old, Depay made his PSV debut in early 2012 and managed to find the back of the net in just his second appearance in the Eredivisie, the Dutch top flight.

It was the 2013/14 season that the Moordrecht born player began to show his true potential though, managing to score 13 goals for his club.

His performances were enough to earn him a call-up to the Netherlands senior squad and he made his first appearance for the Oranje in a World Cup qualifier against Turkey in October 2013.

Louis van Gaal was the manager of the Netherlands squad at the time and so impressed was he by the youngster he took him to the World Cup. Van Gaal was richly rewarded for doing so. Despite seeing his playing time limited, Depay scored twice in Brazil, netting in the 3-2 win over Australia and the 2-0 victory over Chile as the Netherlands progressed to the semi-finals of the tournament.

Understandably there was much speculation over his future last summer with Tottenham reportedly making a £15m bid that was rejected, however Depay remained with PSV Eindhoven and the club will have been delighted he did.

He has 27 goals in 38 appearances in all club competitions so far this season, and 21 in the Eredivisie which makes him the highest goalscorer in the Dutch league. His goals have fired PSV to their first title in seven years, which was secured with a 4-1 home win over Heerenveen in which Depay scored.

Depay tends to operate on the left-hand side of attack and likes to cut inside. A fan of shooting from range, he can also take players on with his superb dribbling abilities which can cause uncertainty from opponents. Something of a weakness in his game is his ability to retain the ball, but as he strengthens there is potential for improvement.

Manchester United are believed to have paid £22m to sign Depay, having spent over £150m in the transfer window last summer.
