Newcastle will try to sign Paris-St Germain's Turkey striker Mevlut Erding in this transfer window.

Manager Alan Pardew was forced to abandon plans to sign Modibo Maiga last month when the Sochaux forward failed a medical – despite a £7m fee having already been agreed – but he is eager to sign another striker during the current transfer window.

Newcastle officials have been at pains to distance themselves from repeated stories linking Andy Carroll with a return to the club he left for £35m this time last year.

Instead, they are once more looking to the French market as they seek to build on an impressive first half of the season.

Newcastle held extensive talks with Erding during the summer but the deal fell through then because of financial differences. Now the 24-year-old Turkish international is concerned over his future at PSG because of the impending influx of high-profile players and is ready to leave during the transfer window.

That has prompted Newcastle's senior figures to prepare a second attempt to take the forward – who has scored only once in 17 appearances this term – to the North-east.

The Paris club, who currently lead Ligue 1, will look to recoup most of the £7m they paid Sochaux just over two years ago and that is within Newcastle's transfer budget.
