Paul Pogba latest: Manchester United legend Paul Scholes says midfielder is 'nowhere near' worth £86m

Paul Scholes believes that Paul Pogba is “nowhere near” worth the world record transfer fee that Manchester United may have to pay for his services.

The Juventus midfielder is Jose Mourinho’s number one transfer target, as United’s new manager hopes to make one more ‘fundamental’ signing in midfield before the start of the season.

Juventus, however, are expected to demand at least £86m for Pogba, who left Old Trafford to join the Serie A club on a free transfer in 2012.

Scholes played with Pogba during the France international’s spell at United and, though he believes he is a talented player, he does not think his former team-mate is worth such a sum.

“He was a very talented young player, I played with him and I knew how good he was,” he told Sport Witness.

“He played for the first team maybe once or twice, but from my understanding he was asking for too much money.

“For his age, he was asking for far too much money, that too for a player who hasn’t played first team football.

“Okay, he has gone on to great things. I think certainly there has been a lot of improvement. He needed to improve if he is going to be a player worth £86m.

“I just don’t think he is worth £86m. For that sort of money, you want someone who is going to score 50 goals a season like [Cristiano] Ronaldo or [Lionel] Messi. Pogba is nowhere worth that kind of money yet.”

After United’s 4-1 defeat to Borussia Dortmund on Friday, Mourinho told reporters that he still hoped to make one more ‘fundamental’ signing, with room for supplementary additions afterwards.

“I said in the first press conference at Old Trafford that our market has a fundamental part, and that part is four players – one central defender, one midfielder, one striker and one creative player.

"When we finish that fundamental market we are balanced.

“Then the market will be open until August 31. Sometimes things happen that you are not expecting and we have to react,” he added.

“But our fundamental market is 75 per cent done and when we sign one midfield player that crucial work will be done.”
