Premier League spending sets two new records on transfer deadline day and passes £1billion in a calendar year for the first time

Premier League clubs have broken the spending record for the third summer in a row and gone past £1billion in a calendar year for the first time - and that doesn't include various add-ons and incentices.

The record-breaking summer saw £870million of spending by the Premier League's 20 clubs, beating last year's mark of £835m, according to analysis from Deloitte.

The spending included a whopping £90m on deadline day, although much of that was driven by Manchester United's £36m move for teenage striker Anthony Martial (whose total fee could rise to £58m because of various add-ons, including if he wins the Ballon d'Or).

United's neighbours twice broke their club record fee this summer, on Raheem Sterling and then Kevin De Bruyne, and also added Nicolas Otamendi, Fabian Delph and Patrick Roberts to spend around £155m this summer - a record for a single club.

A further £130m was spent last January that also sees Premier League clubs break the £1bn barrier for the first time; 2014 came up just short at £965m.

Deloitte also found that Premier League spending doubled their European neighbours, with Italy's Serie A the next highest spenders at £405m, then La Liga with £400m, the Budesliga at £290m and Ligue 1 at a relatively modest £220m.

Arsenal only outspent two clubs, Norwich City and Swansea City, with the £10m signing of Petr Cech the bulk of their total £13m outlay - supporters were predictably furious.

"Looking across Europe, Premier League clubs’ gross and net spending this summer is more than double that of any other European league. The driving force behind this is the growth and distribution mechanism of the league’s broadcast rights," said Alex Thorpe from Deloitte.

"This summer has seen another record level of transfer spending, as Premier League clubs continue to use increases in their revenue to invest in playing talent.

"Total spending in 2015, across both the January and summer windows, is also a new record, reaching the £1bn mark for the first time."

London FX broker Foenix Partners have also found that the pound sterling's strong rate compared to the Euro has saved Premier League club's around £85m on the £483m they spent on bringing in players from the continent.
