Sergio Romero wants to leave Manchester United to secure first-team football ahead of World Cup 2018

The United back-up is concerned he may lose his place as Argentina No.1 after not playing a single minute of Premier League football this season

Manchester United goalkeeper Sergio Romero wants to leave the club in January to cement his place in Argentina's World Cup line-up.

Currently back-up to the imperious David De Gea, Romero is concerned about losing his spot in Jorge Sampaoli's first XI for this summer's tournament in Russia.

The United No. 2 is under pressure from Real Sociedad's Geronimo Rulli and Agustin Marchesin, who plays in Mexico.

Sampaoli has told his squad that they need to be getting regular football or they cannot be guaranteed a place in his 23 for the World Cup, and though it is difficult to see Romero miss out on the squad entirely, he is keen to secure at the very least a loan move away from Old Trafford until the summer.

Where was his touch? If the Belgian’s control had been better, he could have had Everton two-up inside the first 15 minutes, and could have notched four by the end of the 90. Those misses seemed to shake him, which explains the lacklustre penalty.

As quiet an evening as Simon Mignolet enjoyed on Wednesday - until the penalty, that is, which was simply not good enough to beat a ‘keeper of his quality.

Even he probably does not know why, when trying to block Gerard Deulofeu’s shot, he had both feet off the floor and lead with his right when a left would’ve hooked clear. Ultimately, his own goal didn’t matter.

Settled into his usual role of ticking possession over in the middle of the park and rarely looked to do anything more ambitious, save a delightful chip over the top late on for Rashford.

His delicate clipped finish for the opener complemented an uncharacteristically neat display. His movement for the goal was just as impressive.

Masterful, surprisingly, in the first half as he flitted between holding midfield and ‘the hole’. Everton, like the press pack, spent a lot of their time trying to put a finger on where he was playing. They only did late on, once he had ran out of gas.

If United were ever to look back on this season fondly, you suspected it would have something to do with the Frenchman. He’s put them into a cup final, he may have to win it for them too.

Lively, neat play to set up his team-mates, particularly the cute backheel to send Rashford through, but lacked composure when presented with opportunities of his own.

Marcus Rashford - 7 out of 10

Terrorised Everton as part of United’s quick, if not so sharp, attacking triumvirate. Like Lingard, guilty of spurning opportunities.

"Sergio has offers from the Premier League, Argentina and Spain," a source close to the player said.

"He knows he needs to play and the appropriate people in Manchester are aware too."

Romero hasn't played a single minute of Premier League football this season and the League Cup elimination to Bristol City deprived Romero of three more games he would have expected to start, but the issue is complicated by the fact that United would likely need to go out and sign another keeper to allow him to leave.

Highly-rated Joel Pereira is currently third choice at Old Trafford but may be deemed too risky to trust as a back-up with United still battling on three fronts.
