This season, under Steve Bruce, Sunderland have made progress and are a team who can worry the best.
But there remains an infuriating inconsistency about them which suggest that although they have good players, they don't have talent from the very top drawer to make a challenge for a European place - which must be the next target for Bruce's men.
Sunderland have had a large turnover of players over the last few years and Bruce may want to slow down the revolving door, but he will want to add some quality to his squad to maintain momentum. It could even be that some of these will be on his radar.
