Tottenham have announced the signing of Netherlands international Vincent Janssen on a four-year deal after reaching an agreement with AZ Alkmaar following drawn out negotiations, with the striker moving to the Premier League for a reported £18.5m.

Spurs were initially blocked from speaking to the 22-year-old as AZ did not want to sell him, leading to Janssen publicly criticising the Eredivisie side. Having led the league goal-scorers chart with 27 goals last season, Janssen caught the eye of Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino, and the forward eventually travelled to London for a medical on Monday after a fee was agreed between the two clubs.

Janssen made his debut for his country earlier this season, having gone on to win five caps for the Netherlands and scoring three goals including one against England in March, and he is expected to provide competition for Harry Kane after the England international carried the bulk of the responsibility in last season’s Premier League title challenge.

Janssen made his debut with Almere City in the Eerste Divisie, but his 32 goals in 74 appearances in the second tier caught the eye of AZ and moved to the club last summer for the relatively small fee of £340,000.

Janssen arrives as the second signing of the summer at White Hart Lane, with Pochettino already sealing the acquisition of Victor Wanyama last month.
