Mauricio Pochettino is targeting another three signings as Tottenham Hotspur’s summer spending finally gets underway.

Spurs completed the signing of Davinson Sanchez from Ajax and Paulo Gazzaniga from Southampton this week and they are still looking for another defender, a midfielder and one more forward before the window shuts next Thursday.

After being drawn with Real Madrid, Borussia Dortmund and APOEL in the Champions League group stage, Pochettino knows his team need more strength in depth, but he believes the club will deliver.

“Yes I am confident,” Pochettino said on Friday when asked about getting more names in. “We are working hard to change the squad and bring more players in. From our chairman Daniel [Levy] and Steve [Hitchen], our chief scout, trying to find the right profile. We are working hard to strengthen the squad.”

Spurs lost 2-1 to Chelsea at Wembley last Sunday and Pochettino admits that they need reinforcements to be competitive this year. “I think it is so exciting now to have ahead of us the Champions League and the Premier League,” he said. “We are going to play the last Champions League winner, Real Madrid, and Borussia Dortmund. We are so motivated. I think the club is excited too. We want to strengthen the squad and be more competitive.”

There will be departures too in the next few days, with Kevin Wimmer expected to leave with serious interest from Stoke City. “We need to sign a few more players, and a few players need to leave the club,” Pochettino explained. “They need to feel they can play more, and they want to play more. That is a normal period in every club.”
